Atlanta native artist, Bonnie Beauchamp-Cooke, is a true cowgirl. When not in her Atlanta studio, she is with her family and dogs in Madison, Georgia trail riding her horses or working the cattle on their Southeastern farm. Life on the farm is where she developed her passion for art. Bonnie has painted actively since high school and has owned and ridden horses for pleasure and competition all her life. Her evocative paintings of horses and landscapes have won appeal and praise while she continues to create new and inventive views in her art. Bonnie typically works on large canvases or wood, which she prepares with several base layers of mixed media such as molding paste, paint, paper and dirt. She begins by molding and applying the base with her hands, creating several layers and then paints in both acrylic and oil over the surface thereby creating dynamic works of art. One of the most interesting features of her art is the very thick texture, which captures the essence of a horse’s movement and the play of light on a landscape.

Horse commissions are particularly special for Bonnie, especially the moment the client sees the completed painting for the first time. In her words, “I study the horses and then paint them from a split-second moment in time, in this manner I believe I can best capture the power, personality, thoughts and intensity of the animal that has both fascinated and served man from our earliest history”. Bonnie includes a cross in each painting, sometimes hidden, other times bold, an anchoring element symbolizing her spiritual connection with nature.

Bonnie studied at the University of Georgia and The Atlanta College of Art, receiving her BFA in painting and drawing in 1991. Bonnie’s cohorts at The Atlanta College of Art included artistic giants such as Radcliffe Bailey, Kara Walker, Carolyn Carr and Todd Murphy. She maintains a commitment to the arts community by serving on the board of the Hambidge Center, an artist retreat in North Georgia. She was also one of the co-founding board members of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCAga). She has been published in Veranda, Southwest Magazine, Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles, Simply Buckhead and the Atlanta Journal Constitution, among others. Previous representation was Atlanta’s Fay Gold Gallery and Arroya Gallery.
